All the weavers of the world

Cape Weaver male at nest

On 20 June 2012 I began a series called Weaver Wednesday to summarise the basic biology of every weaverbird species (family Ploceidae), week by week. I started with the Red-headed Weaver, and the sequence was random, although first one species from each genus was chosen first, and usually better known species were covered sooner. Two and 1/4 years later, on 10 Sept 2014, the biology of all 117 weaver species was completed (full list).

The following week I started a new series, the history of the discovery of each weaver species. The species were covered in chronological sequence, ie in the sequence that the weaver species were originally described. The series ended 117 weeks later, on 7 Dec 2016, with the Kilombero Weaver. This was followed by 3 short overview blogs on the discovery series.

The third series covered Range changes of southern African weavers, from 4 January 2017 to 28 June 2017. The titles of each week of the above 3 series are listed here.

Weaver Wednesday series 4 was Weaver themes, starting on 5 July 2017 until 10 January 2018, covering various subjects about weavers (listed here, with all news items).

Since I no longer have access to edit the UCT Weaver Watch pages, I have added the Discovery and Biology series on these Birds4Africa web, where I can continue to update the species texts.
